How to Install A Bathroom Vanity

Let’s face it, women like to change their bathroom vanity every now and then especially when they’re in the mood to renovate the bathroom. Of course, the old vanity has to go if it no longer fits the new color scheme and design. It may sound a hard task to replace the vanity but with a little research and time plus some help from your hubby, any homemaker can do it herself.

Removing the old vanity

Keep in mind to turn off the water supply under the sink. To be sure that no water comes out, test the faucet and place a towel or small container to catch any dripping water.

Now, it’s time to loosen the slip nuts that connect the sink’s drainpipe to the drain assembly. From there, you can already disconnect the water supply lines from the faucet.

Loosen the clips that attach the sink to the vanity if there are any. You’ll be able to see them by using a mirror. Also, if you see a bead of sealant that holds the sink and the vanity, slit that using a utility knife.

Once everything is disconnected, you may pull off the sink and carefully place it on a mat or rug to avoid damaging your floor.

Then, loosen the screws that secure the cabinet on the wall and take the vanity out. Clean up the wall and the floor.

Installing the new vanity

First step is to make sure that you’re vanity is in the right position you want it to be. Do this by measuring the height and width of your vanity and mark the edge locations on the wall where you will position it. Use a chalk to make your markings so it’s easy to remove it when you’re done.

From there, measure the locations of the water pipes and drain lines coming out of the wall and mark them on the back of the vanity. Some vanity may have openings in the back. Be sure that the water supply is turned off when you do this. For your water lines, you may use a hole saw to drill holes. Use a larger hole saw in cutting out the drain.

When installing the vanity, remove the drawers and doors. In this way, you can avoid damage and make the vanity lighter for you to move. Position the vanity on the wall and check its level from side to side as well as front and back and let the water and drain pipes go through the holes that you cut in the back part of the vanity.

When everything’s okay, you can now attach it to the wall using screws ideally those that measure three inches and some washers. You can then put back the drawers and cabinet doors.

Some vanity cabinets come with a built in or molded sink and if this is your choice, you will have to install the faucet before putting the top. Install the faucet in the precut holes and tighten it with your hand. Connect your flexible water supply lines to the faucet’s base and the tail pipe to the sink drain. Don’t forget to put silicone caulk around the countertop’s edge and position it properly on the vanity. Check your water afterwards and see if there are any leaks.
